Explain about WTI (winding temprature indicator) and OTI oil (temprature indicator) in power transformer

WTI and OTI in power transformer

The main purpose of power transformer in electrical transmission and distribution is to step up or step down the voltage level.they are generally installed at substations. ex. 33/11kv
so its important to maintain the health of transformer for that we use some montoring devices in transformer .

The devices that indicate the value of winding temprature and oil temprature are known as WTI  and OTI.

  • OTI stands for oil temprature indicator.
  • WTI stand for winding temprature indicator.

Oil⠀Temperature⠀Indicator⠀(OTI)

  • Transformers use oil for insulation and cooling. The OTI measures the temperature of the transformer oil. Monitoring the oil temperature is essential to ensure that it remains within safe operating limits.
  • Excessive⠀temperatures⠀can⠀degrade⠀the oil⠀and⠀insulation⠀materials,The OTI⠀helps⠀prevent⠀overheating⠀by⠀providing⠀real-time⠀temperature⠀readings.

Winding⠀Temperature⠀Indicator⠀(WTI)

The WTI measures the temperature of the transformer winding, which is a critical component. Overheating of the winding can accelerate insulation aging and reduce the transformer's lifespan.

Tripping in WTI and OTI

we can set up an alarm for tripping at particular temprature and when the temprature value exceeds the set value the breaker will ring alarm and after that it will break the circuit breaker.

OTI tripping

  • Its alarm is on 80 degree celsius.
  • Its tripping is on 90 degree celsius.

WTI tripping

  • Its alarm is on 85 degree celsius.
  • Its tripping is on 95 degree celsius.
